% ARABICA

DUBAI MALL  | UAE

I remember the first time I stepped into a % Arabica was back in 2022 whilst wandering around Dubai Mall. Looking more for an experience rather than a cheeky pick-me-up, I was immediately seduced by the coffee shop’s interior concept, with its pure lines and minimalist architecture and design. I am really sensitive to the environment and stepping into the small but well-appointed space immediately put me at ease. Eager to not be disappointed, I ordered a Spanish Latte. Like many things in life, getting the balance right between the sweet and the bitter of a Spanish Latte; determines the success of the barista’s efforts. So, this is my go-to beverage when testing a new coffee spot. Considering that I am still a die-hard fan of the brand, it is safe to say their Spanish Latte was truly best in class. If you don’t know much about the brand or do not have the pleasure of having a local shop, I thought I’d share some insights as well as some top-notch locations for your next travel agenda.

Founded in Kyoto, Japan, in 2014 by Kenneth Shoji, the brand has expanded rapidly, with locations in numerous countries across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Its success story is as much about the coffee itself as it is about vision, design, and a deep understanding of creating a memorable and shareable experience. Shoji’s passion and authenticity have become a global phenomenon in the speciality coffee world, captivating coffee lovers with its minimalist aesthetic, high-quality beans, and dedication to the perfect cup.

THE VISIONARY JOURNEY OF KENNETH SHOJI

The core concept of % Arabica, “See the World Through Coffee,” reflects Kenneth Shoji’s multifaceted passions and his belief in coffee’s power to connect people across cultures. Shoji’s journey to becoming a coffee entrepreneur was anything but linear. He initially worked in the IT industry and even owned a clothing business before discovering his true calling. This diverse background, however, proved invaluable, instilling in him a keen understanding of branding, design, and the importance of creating a cohesive and compelling experience. His vision for % Arabica wasn’t simply about selling coffee; it was about building a community, fostering connection, and creating spaces where people could slow down, appreciate quality, and experience a moment of tranquillity in their busy lives. He wanted to share his love for coffee, design, and travel with the world, and % Arabica became the perfect vehicle. While most % Arabica locations operate under a franchise model, the company maintains a strong focus on quality control and brand identity, ensuring that Shoji’s original vision remains consistent and authentic across the globe.  This meticulous attention to detail extends from the sourcing of beans to the training of baristas, ensuring a consistently high standard.

A CONCEPT OF MINIMALIST ELEGANCE

The striking minimalist design that defines % Arabica stores is the brainchild of Suppose Design Office, a renowned Japanese architectural firm known for their innovative and thoughtful approach to design. Their collaboration with Shoji resulted in spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional and conducive to the % Arabica experience. The interiors typically feature clean lines, stark white walls, and natural materials like light wood and concrete, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The focus is on simplicity and light, allowing the beauty of the coffee itself and the interaction between customers and baristas to take centre stage.  The minimalist aesthetic also extends to the packaging and branding, further reinforcing the brand’s clean and sophisticated image. The iconic “%” symbol, prominently displayed both inside and outside the cafes, serves as more than just a logo; it embodies the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship, echoing the meticulous care taken in every step of the coffee-making process, from bean to cup. The design itself has become a key element of the % Arabica brand, instantly recognisable and contributing significantly to its global appeal and its Instagrammable nature.

THE KYOTO LATTE

While % Arabica offers a variety of expertly crafted coffee drinks, some have become particularly iconic and my personal favourites!

With a palate designed for savoury rather than sweet, nothing disappoints me more when a coffee beverage has too much sugar. So when it came to experiencing the Kyoto Latte, I was a bit skeptical. However, I was pleasantly surprised. As % Arabica’s signature drink, it perfectly balances the rich, nuanced flavour of espresso with creamy milk and a subtle hint of sweetness. The Kyoto Latte is truly a drinkable metaphor for the brand’s commitment to striking the balance between the bitter and the sweet, the complex and the simple.
