When it comes to wearing linen, I have only one rule. It must come from James Perse. It’s nonnegotiable and has been a part of my overall style for over a decade. But don’t be misled, my obsession is not fuelled by blind brand loyalty, but rather by my need for sustainably sourced, expertly crafted, and stylish menswear.
Known for his surfer chic interpretations of casual and athletic wear, James Perse has been a long-time favourite brand and has always been my go-to source for subtle, sophisticated, and exceptionally made clothing that defies trends by setting them. Inspired by the laid-back beach culture of his hometown, native Los Angeleno James Perse launched his eponymous brand in 1996 with a focus on creating high-quality, timeless pieces formed from clean lines, noble materials, and sober shades of grey, ecru, and black. The James Perse universe includes both men’s and women’s collections as well as an equally considered and well-designed home collection…the perfectly holistic complement to both urban and more rugged lifestyles.
One of the key elements of James Perse’s philosophy is his commitment to using only the finest materials in his designs. He sources premium fabrics from around the world, including Japanese cotton, Italian cashmere, and French linen, to ensure that his garments are not only stylish but also durable and long-lasting. In addition to his focus on quality, Perse is also dedicated to sustainability and ethical production practices. He works closely with suppliers to ensure that all materials used in his designs are responsibly sourced, and he partners with factories that prioritize fair labour practices and environmental stewardship. This commitment to sustainability aligns with his minimalist aesthetic, as he believes in creating clothing that is not only beautiful but also mindful of its impact on the planet. Yet, another reason for me to be completely obsessed.

So what better addition to the summer wardrobe than his collection of linen shirts, trousers, and shorts? Crafted from a richly saturated palette of black, white, silver grey, imperial blue, and a buttery khaki which he calls cashew, each piece is both breathable and soft, offering a plethora of styling options. These are the ultimate holiday pieces that can easily transition from a contemplative seaside walk to an evening out on the town.

This season I will be reaching for the relaxed fit linen shorts, made in a heavier version of their classic linen fabric. It has a visible slub texture that when dyed adds to the richness and character of the fabric. The short also features an elasticised waistband and drawcord, which provides comfort without sacrificing style and fit. But for me, the true beauty of the collection is the ability of its pieces to effortlessly pair to create either contrasting, but harmonious colour combinations or softer, tone-on-tone looks. Every day I strive to simplify my life without diluting my penchant for exceptional craftsmanship or my style. For me, James Perse is more than just a brand. It is a lifestyle partner that offers ethically sourced, well designed, and beautifully constructed peices for not only my wardrobe, but for my home as well.
