NOT SO ORDINARY

My Experience with a Scientific Approach to Skincare

As a man living with a predisposition to cutaneous sensitivity, the pursuit of an effective and non-irritating skincare regimen has been a consistently frustrating and terribly expensive endeavour. Often times formulations can be too rich, too active, or too floral which all heighten my sensitivity leading to dry, irritated, or sometimes overly hydrated skin.  There are beautiful, exclusive, and ultra-luxurious brands impeccably displayed on beauty hall counters across the globe that unfortunately have never worked for me.

Last year my quest for the perfect skincare solution, coupled with my almost obsessive appreciation for structured systems, comprehensive collections, and considered branding led me to The Ordinary. I sheepishly started with a basic moisturiser and quickly expanded my collection to include hair, body, exfoliation, and targeted treatment.  The brand’s commitment to fragrance-neutral formulations, a crucial factor for my sensitive skin, has enabled me to integrate a not so ordinary complement to my lifestyle choices.

The Ordinary’s philosophy, rooted in transparency and clinical efficacy, resonates with my holistic approach to wellness, which is reinforced by science. As per of the DECIEM family of products, The Ordinary has effortlessly democratised skincare by offering high-quality, effective products at accessible prices. This ethos is reflected in brand’s ingredient-focused formulations, which prioritise scientifically validated actives and minimise unnecessary additives. The brand’s dedication to clear communication and honest pricing has disrupted the skincare industry, empowering consumers to make informed choices about their skincare.

I believe that achieving ultimate happiness in life largely depends on the effort and dedication we invest in our routines, whether they involve skincare, physical fitness, or mental resilience. However, I feel that a more complicated daily regimen increases the likelihood of not reaching our goals due to time constraints, difficulties with multitasking, or the need to prioritize other aspects of our lives. This is why I find The Ordinary so appealing. Its simple design, packaging, and highly engineered products make it easier to incorporate into my daily routine. The three-step approach of Prep, Treat, and Seal is a straightforward method that supports my pursuit of physical well-being and excellence.

Here is my 3 step routine that I have integrated into my morning and evening rituals.

Prep: Squalane Cleanser

  • The absence of harsh surfactants makes it suitable for sensitive skin, ensuring a non-irritating cleansing experience.
  • This gentle, balm-to-oil cleanser effectively removes impurities without compromising the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
  • Its squalane base provides a hydrating cleanse, leaving the skin soft and prepared for subsequent treatments.

Treat: Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

  • This serum delivers intense hydration through a combination of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5.
  • It effectively plumps the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and enhancing overall skin texture.
  • The lightweight, water-based formula absorbs quickly, providing sustained hydration without a greasy residue.

Treat (Alternative): Soothing & Barrier Support Serum

  • This serum is a vital component of my routine, especially when my skin exhibits signs of sensitivity or barrier compromise.
  • It calms redness and irritation, reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier function.
  • Its formulation is designed to provide immediate relief and long-term resilience, making it a valuable alternative to the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5.

Seal: Natural Moisturizing Factors + PhytoCeramides

  • This rich, emollient cream provides essential hydration and strengthens the skin’s barrier with phytoCeramides.
  • It locks in moisture, preventing transepidermal water loss and maintaining skin suppleness.
  • The formulation is designed to mimic the skin’s natural moisturizing factors, ensuring optimal hydration and protection.

Throughout my journal, I will always endeavour to share with you the products, services, and collections that have had a positive or significant impact on my personal well-being. If I endorse a product or make a recommendation for a particular destination, it is because I have recognised its value through my own experience. That is the case with The Ordinary. The true luxury of this conceptual brand lies in its affordability, enabling consistent adherence to a comprehensive skincare routine without financial strain. This accessibility, fused with the brand’s scientific rigour, reinforces my self-care values, where scientific validation and practical application converge to enhance overall well-being.  Despite the brand being acquired in 2024 by Estée Lauder, a brand known for allowing animal testing of its products for export to certain countries, The Ordinary remains cruelty-free and has been certified with the Leaping Bunny stamp of approval.  Furthermore, all products are formulated without parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, animal oils, coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, mercury, and oxybenzone, aligning with my preference for clean, non-toxic skincare.
